Bizz Johnson Trail
Susanville, California
Gravel
19 miles | 720 ft elevation | 100% gravel
The Bizz Johnson Trail is a multi-use dirt “rail trail” (formerly the Southern Pacific Railroad grade) that weaves through the rugged canyon along the Susan River, connecting the town of Susanville to Mason Station. The trail is about 25 miles one-way (the route featured below covers the first 8.5 miles) and it is well maintained with a gentle grade, making it a great option for someone new to gravel.
Starting from the Susanville trailhead, head west on the trail and soon you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of the canyon. The trail takes you through two tunnels and crosses the Susan River a dozen times on old railroad bridges and trestles.
Around the 6-mile route, you will reach Highway 36. You can take the trail under the highway, which becomes a bit technical for a short moment, or you can carefully cross the road and pick up the trail on the other side.
After making your way to the other side of the highway, you will cross over the Devil’s Corral bridge, a unique and picturesque spot. Continue on through the burn scar area, and then turn around when you’re ready to head back the way you came (the route below turns around about 8.5 miles into the ride). As you ride back in the opposite direction, enjoy the number of bridges and tunnels once more along this historical, tranquil trail.
