King Ridge Loop
Cazadero, California
Road
51 miles | 5,100 ft elevation
King Ridge Road in West Sonoma County is an iconic Northern California climb that is steep and challenging but rewards your efforts with amazing views. By adding on additional miles and heading out to the coast, the route becomes a full loop. If you’re looking for some of the best riding in California and want to ride along the ocean, under redwood canopies, through quiet roads and up tough climbs, this checks all the boxes.
(Note: I did this ride with Comova Cycling, a custom cycling trip operator. More details about them below!)
Starting from Duncans Mills, head north up Cazadero Highway along Austin Creek towards Cazadero. The first several miles are a nice warm-up before reaching the start of King Ridge Road where the climbing begins. You will encounter many steep spots as you make your way through the lush vegetation, and soon your tough effort will be rewarded as you soar along the ridge, surrounded by grassy hills and expansive views.
You will descend down into the redwood trees, and after a short reprieve from climbing, it’s back up again. The climb up Hauser Bridge Road ends when you reach the Ratna Ling retreat center (where you can find a water spigot off to the right). The next several miles will be up and down as you ride along Seaview Road until you reach a highlight of the route: the descent down Meyers Grade (which typically offers spectacular pacific views, unless the coastal fog decides to roll in).
Before you know it, you’ll find yourself on Highway 1, swooping down to sea level and along the coast. Enjoy the ocean views as you make your way through the small town of Jenner, and soon you’ll turn onto River Road, the final stretch back to Duncans Mills.
Hotel Recommendation
Comova Cycling’s Cazita - this adventure cycling cottage is a great homebase and starting point for all the West Sonoma classic routes. The Cazita is super comfy and sleeps 2-4 people with a full bathroom and a full kitchen with all the appliances, dishes and utensils you will need. Additional sleeping space for 1-2 people is available in the cozy Redwood Nest, and your bike will get its own special spot to sleep in the Bike Barn, which includes a workshop area and hydration station. Relax post-ride with a beverage on the patio or take a dip in the warm hot tub.

Monitor the forecast and pack layers. Weather in this region can be unpredictable!
With about two miles of climbing at gradients above 10%, this loop requires a certain level of fitness and the appropriate bike gearing.
Although this route is paved, the roads can be patchy and full of potholes, so wider tires are recommended. Remember to ride smart and safely!
