Historic Railroad Trail
Las Vegas, Nevada
Gravel
9 miles | 500 ft elevation | 79% gravel
The Historic Railroad Trail (about 30 miles east of The Strip) is a well-maintained dirt trail that was once used during the construction of the Hoover Dam to transport supplies via train. This short route is fun and unique, and you feel like a part of history as you ride along the mountainside, through the five large tunnels and down to the modern marvel that is the Hoover Dam.
Start near the Lake Mead Visitor Center and head toward the paved trail, which quickly turns into smooth gravel for the next 4 miles. As you ride through each of the tunnels, the archways nicely frame the ravine and Lake Mead.
At the end of the dirt trail, jump onto the Hoover Dam Access Road and make the sweeping descent towards the dam. As you ride along the top of the dam and be sure to take a moment to pull over and look over the edge to admire the engineering wonder. Once you’ve crossed the Nevada/Arizona state line, turn around and head back the way you came.
If you want to add more miles to your ride, once you’re back at the parking lot, hop on the paved River Mountains Loop Trail.
Hotel Recommendation
Green Valley Ranch Resort, Spa & Casino - this resort is about 10 miles from The Strip and 20 miles from the start of this ride route. It has spacious rooms, a fun, lively pool and plenty of restaurants to choose from. There are also a number of shops and restaurants outside of the resort within walking distance.
Green Valley Ranch's sister property Red Rock Casino, Resort & Spa is also highly recommended and is located near Red Rock Canyon which is another great Las Vegas area ride (see route details here).

Notes
Pay attention to the weather forecast. It can be very hot (it can feel a lot hotter than you would expect) and during certain months there can be flash flooding. Be prepared and be careful!
There are limited services (and spotty cell service), so be sure to bring enough water!
Review the Historic Railroad Trail official website for the history and latest information.
