Levi's GranFondo
Windsor, California
Road
61 miles | 2,900 ft elevation
Levi’s GranFondo is the “richest” single-day professional road race in the world, with top men and women competing for a $156,000 prize purse as they crush the scenic Sonoma County roads in Northern California. In addition to the pro’s course, The Growler (137 miles and 13,800 feet elevation), there are 6 other course options, making this an event that is suitable for all rider levels.
Starting from the town of Windsor, the Medio route covers 60 miles of quintessential Sonoma County roads, passing by countless vineyards and up two short climbs (total elevation is just under 3,000ft). This is a great option for sampling this beautiful wine country region (Dry Creek Valley and Alexander Valley) without the stress of tackling the more intense climbs.
The first 14 miles will have you rolling out of town and riding along Eastside Road, which runs parallel to the Russian River, until you reach the quaint town of Healdsburg. The next 10 miles along West Dry Creek Road is one of my favorite sections in the area, with small rollers and endless winery views. After a brief time on Dry Creek Road, you’ll turn onto Dutcher Creek Road for the first climb of the day (about 2 miles).
After crossing under the freeway (and hitting up the aid station), you’ll head south on Asti Road with the 101 Freeway on the right and acres of vineyards on your left. After passing through the quiet town of Geyserville, it’s time to wind through the Alexander Valley for the next 10 miles. The roads can be bumpy in spots during this section, but the views make up for it. Soon you’ll turn onto Chalk Hill Road where you’ll find yourself under a canopy of trees before heading up the final climb around mile 52. Enjoy the descent down as you make your way back into town and across the finish line at Windsor Town Green.
This is one of my favorite parts of California to ride and this event is the perfect way to experience these incredible roads, especially if you opt to take on one of the longer routes which are more remote and usually do not have any services. Additionally, this event has well-stocked aid stations, police presence at busy intersections, great course markings, a variety of post-ride food options and a fun viewing experience at the finish line!
