Low Gap
Ukiah, California
Gravel
40 miles | 4,000 ft elevation
Low Gap is the first race in the Grasshopper Adventure Series and is considered a “Hopper Classic”. This event will wake up your winter legs as you tackle some big elevation gains on this stunning course.
The short course was 40 miles of mixed terrain with 4,000 feet of elevation. The route was packed with big climbs and long descents on both pavement and dirt. The gravel sections were fun and not too technical, and the best part was how quiet the entire course was thanks to a partnership with Mendocino Redwood Company. Riding on private roads that were only open to riders during this event was truly something special.
It was very cold in the morning while waiting at the starting line, but once we got going, the climbing started right away so I warmed up quickly. Although technically a race, my winter legs were moving slowly and I just took my time and really soaked in this beautiful course.
As far as events goes, this was really well done. They had great signage on course and a well-stocked aid station; and post-ride I had an excellent meal from the food truck and my bike got a free wash.
Hotel Recommendation
Holiday Inn Express & Suites Ukiah - this hotel is just 5 miles away from the starting line. The rooms are spacious and clean, and the complimentary breakfast is a nice option for a free meal pre-race.
