Stetina's Paydirt
Carson City, Nevada
Gravel
53 miles | 3,600 ft elevation | 57% gravel
Ride date: May 2025
Stetina’s Paydirt in Carson City, Nevada, is not your typical gravel race. Instead of the usual all-out race pace, the format consists of three timed segments on the Long Route or two timed segments on the Medium Route, allowing for moments of fun with friends and a chance to enjoy the un-timed sections.
I opted for the Medium Course which is only 9 miles shorter than the Long Course, cutting out the third timed segment along Clear Creek Trail. The route began on pavement as we left the city behind heading east, and soon we were riding dirt along the Prison Hill Trail network. The first timed segment started around mile 10, as we entered the rugged landscape of the Pine Nut Mountains. The next 8 miles were a bit technical, climbing up the rough, rutted and sometimes sandy road.
Once at the top, the views of the Eastern Sierras were a nice distraction from the windy conditions that were starting to pick up. Then it was time for a long 8-mile descent on gravel before making our way back to pavement. The next 10 miles were on flat, paved roads but it was during this section that the wind was the strongest, making it almost as challenging as the earlier climbs. At mile 39, there was finally a reprieve as we passed through the town of Genoa and made it to the final aid station (where hotdogs and other snacks brought me back to life!)
Then it was time for the second segment and 6 miles of paved climbing before making the turn into Indian Hills for some singletrack. This fun 5-mile section of flowy, dirt trails offered beautiful views as we ripped around corners through the picturesque high desert landscape. The final 3 miles back into town were the perfect cool down before crossing the finish line.

Despite the strong winds throughout the day, I enjoyed exploring this part of Nevada and tackling a demanding route. The event was well-organized and offered great support. If you’re looking for a challenge and something a little different than your typical gravel race, Paydirt just might be the race for you!

Hotel Recommendation
Hampton Inn & Suites Carson City - located 15 minutes from the starting line, this hotel had plenty of parking, clean rooms and a free hot breakfast. Although there are not many restaurants or stores nearby, it was a short drive into the busier part of town.
